Media Release - Alice Springs – Darwin Railway
Track repairs have commenced between Alice Springs & Tennant Creek

Track repairs will commence tomorrow to repair around 100 metres of track damaged by floodwaters between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

Ongoing heavy rain over the week-end has hampered efforts to deploy equipment to the site however this has now occurred and work will start tomorrow to repair the damaged section of track to enable train operations to recommence. The timeline to complete the repairs will be subject to favourable site conditions and the weather remaining dry.

Plans are being prepared to recommence train operations between Alice Springs and Darwin over the coming week-end.

Meanwhile FreightLink continues to operate trains between Adelaide and Alice Springs to supply Northern Territory markets and all bulk mineral trains servicing the Bootu Creek manganese mine and the Frances Creek iron ore mine remain unaffected by the temporary closure.

Media Release - Alice Springs – Darwin Railway
Temporary Track Closure between Alice Springs & Tennant Creek

As the result of heavy rainfall around Alice Springs and Tennant Creek overnight, flooding has damaged a section of track approximately 230 kilometres North of Alice Springs requiring closure of that section of the track.

A short section of track has suffered scouring of the formation preventing safe train operations;FreightLink has track staff at site and have commenced to position the necessary resources to repair the track.

Significant surface water resides in the area and it will take some two days for the area to dry sufficiently for FreightLink to operate the plant on site to effect the repairs.

The Adelaide bound Ghan service, which was in the area is returning to Darwin pending line reopening.

FreightLink will continue to operate trains between Adelaide and Alice Springs where the freight may be collected for road bridging to other Northern Territory locations.

FreightLink is working to reopen the link to Darwin as soon as possible.
